Origins
Founded in 1869, the Wilhelm Walch Winery showcases a visionary approach to winemaking that began with the conversion of a Jesuit convent into an underground cellar in the heart of Tramin, a medieval town in the renowned Alto Adige wine district. Over the decades, the Walch family has expanded their historic winery and acquired several thriving vineyards, enhancing their reputation for producing premium quality wines throughout the region.
Now in its fifth generation, the Walch family continues to manage the estate, which has grown significantly over its nearly 150-year history. The winery combines historical charm with modern facilities, supported by approximately 100 contracted grape growers who supplement the family-owned vineyards.
The Alto Adige wine region, situated on the southern edge of the Alps in the Dolomites, benefits from an ideal climate for viticulture. The vineyards, nestled in gentle hills and surrounded by towering Alpine peaks, enjoy the perfect interplay of fresh Alpine air and Mediterranean sunshine. This unique climate, with cooler night temperatures and warm summer days, provides optimal conditions for grape cultivation.
The Wilhelm Walch estate's vineyards are located in Tramin and Caldaro, extending along the Mendola ridge at altitudes between 250 and 700 metres above sea level. These steep locations contribute to the fresh, precise fruit character of the wines. The soil, rich in Dolomite rock, is predominantly calciferous, with sandy and loamy variations.
Sustainably cultivated according to environmentally friendly guidelines, the vineyards are meticulously managed with manual cultivation and gentle hand-harvesting practices. This approach ensures the production of clean wines that exhibit a refined varietal style, as exemplified by the 2020 Wilhelm Walch Lagrein.
