Named for the fine layers of quartzite and clay beneath its 1940s vines at Hutton Vale Farm, the 2023 Lamella Shiraz delivers vibrant violet and dark-berry aromas, seamlessly woven with refined tannins and mineral drive—a pure expression of Dan Standish’s rigorous barrel selection and “New Barossa” vision.

Overview

Dan Standish, hailing from six generations of Barossan vignerons, founded The Standish Wine Company in 1999 while still honing his craft at Torbreck Vintners. His early releases drew on an ancestral Shiraz parcel farmed by his father, but when family circumstances ended that chapter, Dan turned his attention to Eden Valley’s Hutton Vale Farm. There, vines dating back to the 1940s thrive on a shallow, quartz-rich hillside—an unlikely site for Barossa-style power but ideal for the precision he sought.

He named the cuvée “Lamella” in homage to the fine layers of clay and stone that run through the soil, believing they impart an almost architectural elegance to Shiraz. Since its debut in 2002, Lamella has embodied Dan’s “New Barossa” philosophy: old-vine intensity tempered by cool-climate poise. Only the most expressive barrels earn their place in the final blend, reflecting a ruthless selection ethos that sees up to 80 percent of ferment parcels set aside.
