Origins
Founded in 1965 by Renée and Bruno Sorg in Ingersheim, and now nestled in the picturesque town of Eguisheim, Domaine Bruno Sorg has carved a niche for itself with its steadfast philosophy of using only estate-grown fruit. This commitment ensures that each vineyard reaches its full potential without compromise. The Sorgs' vineyards, notably encompassing halves of three prestigious Grand Crus—Florimont, Pfersigberg, and Eichberg. Renowned for producing distinctively styled wines that showcase the rich diversity of Alsace's terroir.
With a commitment to sustainable vineyard management, Domaine Bruno Sorg emphasises the natural expression of each site, allowing the coexistence of diverse flora and fauna to enrich the ecosystem. This approach results in wines that are not only a reflection of their environment but are also noted for their rich fruit, concentrated flavours, intense aromatics, and refined structures. The typical dry style of their wines, favoured by second-generation winemaker François Sorg, stands out in Alsace, often dictated by the year's vintage yet consistently aiming for dryness.
The 2017 Sylvaner Vieilles Vignes is a prime example of this philosophy in action, produced from old vines that contribute depth and complexity to the wine. This vintage, like those before it, is mostly destined for the cellars of long-term private clients, making it a rare treasure outside its home region.
Cork Tasting Notes
If you have yet to experience Sylvaner, the 2017 Bruno Sorg is an exemplary introduction to this varietal. Sourced primarily from vines that are 40-50 years old, supplemented by fruit from venerable plantings nearing a century in age, this Sylvaner is notably expressive. The bouquet is an enchanting fusion of white florals, ripe white peaches, and pear fruits, enriched by a subtle hint of spice.
On the palate, the wine reveals a rich, textural depth, with layers of ripe citrus, sweet juicy pear, plum, and apples. It is light and tangy, yet generously laden with fruit flavours, offering a fresh, invigorating sip without veering into sweetness. The term 'Vieilles Vignes', French for 'old vines', is a declaration of the superior quality this wine possesses, thanks to its storied provenance.
