Overview

Honest, authentic and passionate are words that we use to describe the wineries we work with and without a doubt, Cobaw Ridge fits this mould perfectly. The winery was established in 1985 by Alan and Nelly Cooper. Vines were planted on granitic, sandy soil in the cool climate Macedon Ranges, on the cusp of the Great Dividing Range at some 610m. Their positioning, in a natural amphitheatre, provides the perfect place to produce terroir-driven wines. 100% estate grown, they are now fully certified organic and biodynamic, something they are very proud of, and deservedly so.

The Original Block Pinot Noir is a hallmark expression of Cobaw Ridge, showcasing the unique granite soils and cool climate of this renowned Macedon Ranges vineyard. Farmed biodynamically by Alan and Nelly Cooper, the vineyard has gained respect for its restrained yet powerful Pinot Noir. The 2023 vintage was crafted with gentle handling in the winery, including partial whole-bunch fermentation, which highlights the wine’s natural vibrancy and depth.

Known for a profile that layers dark cherry, wild berry, and a savoury, earthy undertone, this wine is marked by polished acidity and a mineral backbone from the granite-rich soil. Each sip offers a refined texture with subtle spice and floral hints emerging over time. This Pinot Noir is both a tribute to Cobaw Ridge’s terroir and a compelling choice for those seeking a Pinot with finesse and regional character.

Cork Tasting Notes

The 2023 Cobaw Ridge Original Block Pinot Noir opens with aromas of black cherry, dried herbs, and a subtle smokiness. On the palate, flavours of plum, dark berries, and gentle spice intermingle with a fine-grained tannic structure, culminating in a persistent, mineral-driven finish. The wine’s balance of fruit intensity and earthy complexity makes it a memorable and elegant Pinot Noir well-suited for ageing.

Mike Bennie, The Wine Front September 2024

As with many great wines, the more time spent with it, the more the journey is cinematic, which is particularly apt here. On opening, a seamless, svelte and lighter weight red with dark cherry, caraway seed, Aussie bush elements and white pepper dusted in. The more time open, the more big swirls, the build of savoury elements in hazelnut, garam masala spice, spearmint and amaro-like qualities. The texture opened up somewhat too, more expansive, a spread in the palate on guiding trails of gossamer. There are wines that deliver strict bounds of Olympic performance, precise and at the apex, and then those that build as an expressive performance. The latter here, and we’re better for it.
