Gut Oggau’s 'Cecilia' Rosé 2022 is a striking natural wine from Burgenland, Austria, made with a blend of red and white grapes. Gut Oggau is renowned for their biodynamic practices, crafting wines with minimal intervention, allowing the true character of the region and the varietals to shine.

Origins

Gut Oggau is a winery based in the small town of Oggau in Burgenland, Austria, founded in 2007 by Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe. Before starting this venture, Eduard worked with his father producing conventional wines in Styria, while Stephanie's family ran the Michelin-starred restaurant Taubenkobel. Together, they undertook the meticulous restoration of a 17th-century winery that had been abandoned for two decades, including the revival of a 200-year-old screw press. Interestingly, the neglect of the vineyard during this time allowed pesticides and chemicals to naturally dissipate, giving them a fresh start to farm biodynamically from the outset. Today, the estate is fully Demeter certified.

When working in the cellar, Eduard and Stephanie noticed that each wine seemed to develop its own distinct personality. This inspired them to create labels that reflected the character of each bottle. They imagined the wines as part of a family, with each given a name and a hand-drawn face by artist Jung von Matt.

The "children" of the family—Atanasius, Theodora, and Winifred—are wines that are youthful, energetic, and expressive. The "parents"—Joschuari, Emmeram, Timotheus, and Josephine—come from vines that benefit from more sunlight, resulting in fuller, richer wines. Finally, the "grandparents"—Mechtild and Bertholdi—are made from older vines in single vineyards, producing wines with more traditional character.

Gut Oggau’s vineyards are primarily field blends, so the focus is less on specific grape varieties. However, they work with six main grapes: Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), and Gewürztraminer.

Cork Tasting Notes

In the glass, 'Cecilia' greets you with a pale, copper-pink hue. Aromas of watermelon, red berries, herbs, and a hint of spice are immediately apparent, while the palate offers juicy strawberry and raspberry flavours, complemented by a zesty acidity and a touch of minerality. The finish is crisp and dry, making it an easy-drinking, refreshing option for any occasion.
