Origins

In the heart of the Jura, Julien Mareschal epitomises the innovative spirit of the region’s young vignerons. After honing his craft in Burgundy and Bordeaux and learning alongside Jura notables like Xavier Reverchon and Pascal Clairet, Julien established his own domain at the age of 23. His 5-hectare vineyard is primarily planted with Savagnin, representing almost half of his holdings, along with 1 hectare of Chardonnay and smaller plots of Ploussard (Poulsard), Pinot Noir, and Trousseau. These vines thrive on the classic marnes (marl) soils of Pupillin—grey, blue, and red for the Savagnin and Ploussard, and clay limestone for the other varietals.

Since acquiring organic certification in 2009 and transitioning to biodynamic practices in 2012, Julien has meticulously managed every aspect of the vineyard and winery operations. His approach includes hand harvesting, sorting, and destemming, with a preference for using both old and younger oak barrels to mature the wines. This hands-on process ensures that the expressive potential of the Jura’s terroir is the star in each bottle.

The 2013 Arbois Vin Jaune, crafted from vines averaging 40 years of age, is a stellar example of Julien's dedication to quality. It showcases the complexity and richness that Jura wines, particularly those from Savagnin grapes, can offer.

This iconic oxidative Jura wine is a quintessential expression of its unique terroir. Grown at altitudes between 350-450 metres, the Savagnin grapes are fully destemmed, fermented in large wooden vats (foudres), and undergo malolactic fermentation over 10-12 months. The wine is then aged under a voile (yeast cap) for over six and a half years, a meticulous process that enhances its complexity and distinctive oxidative character.

Cork Tasting Notes

Epitomising the classic style of Arbois wines the 2013 Vin Jaune d'Arbois features a pronounced bouquet that combines exotic citrous with notes of almond and a distinct earthy undertone. On the palate, it is richly textured and vibrantly alive, marked by the characteristic tartness of 'flor' yeast and a substantial body. This wine is a profound expression of traditional Jura winemaking.
