A rich and full-bodied wine from Eden Valley, 365 metres above sea level. With flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry, and cocoa and a complex, mineral-driven finish, this Cabernet showcases the unique terroir of one of South Australia's oldest vineyards.

Origins

Established in 1857, the Stonegarden vineyard is one of South Australia's oldest and most storied vineyards, playing a significant role in the region's winemaking heritage. Nestled in the elevated Eden Valley at 365 metres above sea level, the vineyard's ancient vines, some dating back to 1858, and others from the 1940s, thrive in soils rich with granitic rock and quartz, adding a distinctive mineral complexity to the wines.

The Eden Valley, part of the famous Barossa region, benefits from a higher elevation and cooler climate compared to the Barossa Valley floor. This unique geography lends a refined structure and distinct minerality to the wines.

Some of the world's oldest Cabernet vines are used to create the 2021 Stonegarden Cabernet Sauvignon. From these old vines, the grapes are handpicked, guaranteeing that only the best fruit is chosen. The wine is matured in French oak barrels after a customary fermentation method that extracts complex tannins and rich flavours. With further richness and structure added by this careful oak ageing process, the 2021 Stonegarden Cabernet Sauvignon is a real representation of its outstanding vineyard.

Cork Tasting Notes

The blackcurrant, blackberry, and cocoa flavours of the 2021 Stonegarden Cabernet Sauvignon are accompanied by layers of baking spice, mint, and truffle in an enticing aroma. With strong flavours of dark berries and a hint of dark chocolate, it offers a full-bodied, rich experience on the mouth. The wine has a lengthy and nuanced finish driven by its balanced structure developed by its well-integrated tannins and bright acidity. This Cabernet Sauvignon's overall elegance is enhanced by the depth and refinement brought forth by the mineral complexity found in the quartz soils and granitic rock.

Planted in 1858, 1862 and 1970. Not sure why the Cabernet is more expensive than the Grenache, but hey!

Choc-mint, truffle, cocoa, blackcurrant, blackberry, baking spice and sage. It’s a rich wine, lavish Eden Valley Cabernet character, which is better for some, than others. Juicy black fruit, a lot of truffle and tobacco, with a sweetness to dark fruit, tea and chocolate, and kind of overt in that way. Tannin has a milk tea and dark chocolate grip, and the finish is sooty and sweet, with drying dusty tannin on a truffle-laced finish of solid length. It’s quite a lot, and some may love, but for me, just a little too soupy and drying. Still.
