About
In the world of wine, there are families whose names carry a legacy of excellence. Such is the case with the Barry family, whose roots run deep in the Clare Valley. Jim Barry, a legend in his own right, laid the foundation for a dynasty of winemakers, including his grandsons Sam and Tom Barry. Under the label Clos Clare, the brothers continue the family tradition of crafting some of the region's finest reds, but have also taken on a new challenge: Riesling.
The Riesling from Clos Clare is grown on a small but mighty section of the Florita vineyard, a site that has earned a reputation as one of Australia's most celebrated Riesling terroirs. Sam and Tom have taken this heritage seriously, crafting a wine that is a true expression of the Clare Valley.
"Today, this incomparable wine is made by Sam Barry (Jim Barry’s grandson) and it is all about excitement – from the tender yet racy nose to the pellucid, glassy palate and beyond to a breakneck, high-drama finish. I have followed this wine for just short of twenty years and it has never failed to move me.” Matthew Jukes
Tasting Notes
Particularly good intensity to be found in the 2022 Clare Valley Rieslings.
Lime, pink grapefruit, bath salts, a little spice, thyme and generally good waft of perfume. It’s intense, with a grapefruit pith and gin and tonic flavour, lime/lemon sorbet, a stony chalky feel, clean acidity, excellent length, with a pleasing quinine and lime zest tang to close. Classic Watervale. A terrific vintage for this wine.
